about

“Man In Black”, Tarblossom’s tribute to the music of Johnny Cash, weaves a selection of Cash’s songs together into a part-biographical, part-fictional narrative with the Man in Black himself as the main character. Much of Cash’s repertoire consisted of narrative songs – some humorous, others tragic - so it is only fitting that a tribute to his legacy would take the form of a story inspired by his life.

While the tale of the album’s protagonist mirrors many aspects of Cash’s own experience, it does not pretend to be a historically accurate account. Rather, it seeks to capture the soul and spirit of what the Man in Black represented – the darkness and the light, the violence and the love, the fallen and the redeemed. Cash had an uncanny ability to identify with and speak for those with whom he shared little in common. Take, for instance, the welcome he received from the inmates at Folsom prison who embraced him as though he were one of them for his famous 1968 concert. This was due, in part, to the fact that Cash was more than just a skilled songwriter; he was also a consummate song-interpreter, able to deliver a line such as “I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die” with chilling authenticity.

Thus, whether performing an original composition or recording a cover version, whether singing of his own experiences of those of others, Cash embodied a persona that far exceeded himself and who stood in solidarity with the pauper and the prisoner, the outlaw and the oppressed, the lonely and the lost. In the end, “Man In Black” seeks to transcend its own tribute by becoming a witness to the One of whom Cash himself repeatedly testified. Ultimately, the Man in Black is eclipsed by the Man in White, the great Savior of the greatest sinner. There truly can be no greater tribute than this.

about

Tarblossom Turin, Italy

Tarblossom is the musical project of Jonathan Kleis, an electro-roots rock that mixes the fire of an Old Testament prophet with the fury of a Flannery O'Connor story. The inspiration behind Tarblossom can be found in the earthy grit of old-time Americana, the swampy spank of Delta bottleneck, and the pulsing ambience of modern electronica as a contemporary setting for ancient texts. ... more
